Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," described an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural support.
